Centranthus ruber (L.) DC., commonly known as red valerian, is a herbaceous perennial plant. It has a clump-forming habit and grows up to 1m tall and 60cm wide. It is a tough, undemanding plant that requires little care. Red valerian prefers well-draining soil with a pH of 6-7.5. It can survive in poor soil conditions and is tolerant of drought.
